Western Instruments’ Pit Gauges utilize our unique Push to Read Indicators, which allow operators to Scan through areas of corrosion (pitting). This feature also allows the deepest area of a pit to be quickly identified and measured.
Western offers 3 different Models of Indicators, that are fully interchangeable between all of our Pit Gauge Blades, and offered as follows;
▪ Imperial Dial Indicator (N88-I)
Dial Diameter: 1.5”.
Range: 0.550”, in 0.001” Graduations (0.100” per revolution).
Accuracy: 0.0005”
▪ Metric Dial Indictor (N88-M)
Dial Diameter: 38mm.
Range: 14mm, in 0.01mm Graduations (1.0mm per revolution).
Accuracy: 0.005mm
▪ Digital Indicator (N88-D)
Diameter: 55mm (2.2”), Digit Height 12.7mm (0.5”).
Range:
Metric: 14mm, in 0.01mm Graduations (1.0mm per revolution).
Imperial: 0.550”, in 0.001” Graduations (0.100” per revolution).
Accuracy: 0.005mm (0.0005”)
Western offers a variety of Contact Points, for the Pit Gauge Product Series, which are all 0.625” (16mm) long. Any ADG Contact point can be used with our special dial indicators, but a different length may affect Height Zeroing of the Pit Gauge, or the vertical position of the Dial Indicator within a Pit Gauge Blade. Contact Points are easily replaced, by extending the Dial Indicator, to the maximum depth position, and turning the Contact Point counter clockwise, to unscrew it.
#1 Contact Point (or Standard) – N88-S.
This Contact Point was designed for general Corrosion Testing, and remains the most universal in use. The #1 tapers down, over its length, to a blunt point that is less than 0.030” (0.75mm) in Diameter.
#2 Contact Point (or Conical) – N88-C
This Contact Point is more robust than the Standard Contact Point, due to its much larger size. The #2 Contact Point is recommended when a large amount of Scanning is being performed. The #2 tapers down, over its length, to a rounded point that is approximately 0.020”(0.5mm) in Diameter.
#3 Needle Point – N88-N
The Needle Point was developed to satisfy the needs of Corrosion Coupon Evaluations, where pits are shallow and small in diameter. The #3 Needle Point tapers down to a very sharp point, so as a result they tend to be very delicate.
If operators require extra range during an inspection, ask your distributor about Western’s Contact Point Extensions (N88-X).
All of Western Instruments Pit Gauges have a range of just slightly over 12.7mm or 0.500”, with any one of our 3 types of Contact Points. However, during some inspections, this range is simply not enough. To increase the range of our Pit Gauges, Western offers a Contact Point Extension (N88-X). These Extensions are machined to extend the depth of the Contact Point by 12.7mm or 0.50”, thus a properly zeroed Pit Gauge will have a range of 12.7mm to 25.4mm or 0.50” to 1.00”.
